Almost fell off the bed of my husbands truck as I was reaching for the highest fruit in the pear tree. I was using a twister fruit picker and it is lightweight and pretty easy to use even with a standard size fruit tree. I had some of the pears fall and hit the bed of the truck and they exploded. The goats and sheep were very happy when that happened (I think they were clapping?). Any of the fruit that is overripe, severely damaged or already eaten goes to the goats and sheep. I think we lost around 15lbs to bugs and fallen fruit with bug or animal damage.
There are probably 10lbs of pears left in the tree . The total poundage of harvested fruit was 125lbs. Our pear tree this year produced over 150lbs of pears, last year it was under 125lbs!
