Fall is Here!

Fall is here?

Fall is Here and it has taken it’s dear sweet time! Now that the leaves are starting to turn and the apples are coming in I am ready for long sleeves and cool evenings in front of the wood stove. Unfortunately our wood stoves is surrounded with canning boxes, canning equipment  and lots of other junk…….. So no cozy wood stove at the moment..drat!
When I was leaving the house this morning all the chickens came running up…..looking hopeful,so I went inside and got some of the guts of the white pumpkin I processed  yesterday. The rooster starting making his clucking “come and get it” and in no time the pumpkin guts were gone!

Today as I picked up my Maine Cranberries ,local jalapeno and red peppers I was sweating as it was around 75 degrees. It was foggy this morning when I left to do errands and I dressed for another cool rainy day (I never believe the weather man) .
With my  new ingredients I am  planning to make:
Cranberry  jalapeno jelly, Fiery Jalapeno cranberry relish(which I haven’t made in 2 years)  and Green tomato Preserves/Marmalade which also has jalapeno peppers in it.
I love using cranberries in preserved foods. They are high in pectin, are tart, can be frozen for 3 or 4 months without too much deterioration  and add great color to whatever you add them too! Since we haven’t had a frost yet, I won’t be making the Green tomato preserves or marmalade right away since I still have tomatoes ripening. But is supposed to get cold in the coming week,we shall see!
