Chicken the modern way.

We raise all our chicken (natural and organic) the same way.

Instead of free-ranging, which can be a good way to feed the owls and hawks, we use chicken tractors. These pens, bottomless, with half roofs to allow shelter but also allow some rain and sun, get moved often, to allow the chickens to scratch, eat bugs and grass, and generally do chicken things. One of the important definitions of humane raising refers to letting animals do what comes to them naturally. No close confinement, red contact lenses (you think I'm joking??) and no beak trimming.

The only difference between natural and organic at Webster Ridge is the feed used and the presence of a coccidiostat ( coccidiosis + stat(stop) ) in the first bag of food. Coccidiosis is a severe stomach upset that affects all animals if they have not yet built up a resistance to the natural bugs in the environment. The coccidiostat is not a wonder drug but it is a chemical. We feel that the trade-off of no infant mortality, in exchange for a severly limited use of this chemical, is worth it.

We process all our chicken right here. If you want to come see, or even help and learn how, please write! We comply with all applicable health and agricultural regulations in order to give you a safe, tasty chicken every time.

Most folks are amazed at the difference in taste and texture. We are used to it now. But we don't ever eat that other stuff anymore.
