Here is our statement regarding drugs, chemicals, hormones and other nonsense that damages food.
We do not feed any dietary (sub-clinical)drugs or chemicals at all, with one exception: The NONorganic chickens get a chemical (not an antiboitic) in the first bag of feed that prevents coccidiosis. Coccidiosis is a generic stomach upset, caused by environmental bacteria, that all animals are prone to. Infants have not yet developed a resistance to it and I could lose all the chicks if they had a problem. After the first bag, they are unmedicated.
Occasionally an animal gets sick. When this happens, I consult my vet. He knows how we feel about drugs in general and advises accordingly. If drugs are given to an animal that is planned for consumption, we record this and make this known at time of reservation or purchase. Some folks care (we do, personally) and some do not. We feel that providing the information allows you to make this important decision in an educated way. By the way, we have never had to medicate a 'food' animal' - in the last 5 years we have treated a handful of sheep for conditions requiring penecillin and one for pneumonia.
We worm our sheep, goats and donkey several times a year, if needed. This is done in concert with food production cycles, to minimize trace chemicals in meat. Because of their life cycle, the animals used for food seldom if ever, need worming.
All drugs and chemicals have a withdrawal period that varies from chemical to chemical and species to species. This is the minimum time you need to wait after medicating, before you can use the animal for food. This is a legal matter and of course, we would be very strict about this. We also would let you know about any such drug use, prior to purchase. Our practices ensure against this ever being an issue.
Non-Theraputic Steriods are out of the question. Not acceptable, not needed, not used.
The damage that drugs and chemicals have done to our food is immense. Loss of natural resistance. The unfair trade of size for taste and nutrition. These are just some of the things that make finding good food a challenge.
Non-theraputic use of chemistry increases size with no regard for taste. It has no place here or, indeed, anywhere.
